MIELA EFRAIM
Bear Chair
Designing a chair with integrated bag hooks informed by Danish furniture design practices

Background
The primary affordance of chairs is sitting. When trying to hang the straps of my bag on the backing of chairs, the straps often slip off because the chair was not designed with this utility in mind. While studying Furniture Design for a semester in Copenhagen, I found inspiration in the Danish Design principle of form and function in equilibrium. For my final project, I designed a chair with bag hooks seamlessly integrated into the overall form that incorporates the visual serenity and purpose-driven design of Danish furniture.
Form Exploration
Visiting furniture showrooms around Copenhagen, I drew inspiration from the natural forms, smooth transitions, simplicity, and minimalism of famous Danish chair designs. I was particularly drawn to Hans Wegner's approach to chairs as sculptural forms that serve the human body, and Arne Jacobsen's use of smooth organic shapes.

Concept Development

Design Development
To round off the seat I used a band saw, and to create the curves for the bag hooks I used a hand saw, chisel, and electric sander. I chose a dark wood finish to create a sense of elegance and sophistication.
