For my Human-Machine System Design course, I was tasked with interviewing someone who has a full time job about their daily workflow, and designing a human-machine system that will automate a portion of their workflow

Semi-structured interview to learn more about job tasks and identify areas of opportunity to introduce automation into daily workflow. I identified the collection and upload of patient vital measurements into the office computer system as a window of opportunity to introduce automation to eliminate redundancy from Avi's workflow.

Current Workflow

During patient assessments, Avi collects patient vital measurements and records them on a physical patient intake form. Afterwards, he must transfer the patient vital measurements from the physical form onto the patient's online portal on the office computer. This task is redundant, and offers a window of opportunity to automate the transfer and upload of patient vital measurements.

Human-Machine System Concept

I designed a physical handheld device that Avi can use to enter patient vital measurements during patient assessments, which will be automatically transferred to the patient's online portal. For this human-machine system, the device functions as machine 1, the office computer functions as machine 2, and the medical assistant functions as the human input by facilitating the information transfer. This system eliminates the use of a physical patient intake form and the need to manually upload patient vital measurements to the computer.
